Y-Age Algorithm: Breakthrough P&G SgIC Research on Skin Redness & Aging
August 1, 2023
Skin redness can be a temporary phenomenon, or a tell-tale sign of long term skin aging, according to new P&G research published at the 2023 World Congress of Dermatology.
Omotezako Tatsuya and his team at the P&G Singapore Innovation Center (SgIC) have been studying this phenomenon. There are two well-established types of skin redness: acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term or inflammaging). Chronic redness can accelerate skin aging, leading to dark spots, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity.
To distinguish between acute and chronic redness, Tatsuya developed the Y-age algorithm, a method of analyzing redness patterns, which he described in a poster co-authored with his colleagues Bandara Dissanayake and Denny Deng at the 2023 World Congress of Dermatology. Their research found that acute and chronic redness have subtle but distinct patterns. For example, acute redness tends to be more evenly distributed, while chronic redness is more disordered.
Importantly, they found that chronic redness patterns correlate with higher levels of inflammation biomarkers.
The team assigned low y-age scores to acute redness patterns and high y-age scores to chronic redness patterns.
In a study of almost 200 Chinese female participants over a decade, those with low y-age scores aged gracefully, while high y-age scores correlated with more pronounced dark spots and wrinkles.
Recently, at the P&G Beauty Continuum experience, Zako-san unveiled the y-age skin analysis, providing a predictive insight into an individual's propensity for accelerated aging.
This breakthrough achievement allows people to glimpse into their skin's future and take proactive steps to care for it. Congratulations to Zako-san and his team for this pioneering work!
